My Hornby Dublo 3 Rail Layout

Post by Wolseley » Tue 10. Sep 2019, 06:30

It has taken a long time (about three years), but I have eventually got around to fixing down the track and wiring my layout, which I have planned with the help of Railmodeller Pro. I had tried a few of the freeware Windows based applications on a decrepit old laptop I have in a cupboard, to see if I wanted to use such a tool and, when I decided I did, I bought Railmodeller Pro. Initially I chose it more or less because it was the only option, given that I have a Mac but, after I had used it for a while, I found it to be better than the Windows programs I had previously tried.

It has been a long drawn out process, as I tweak the design here or there, or add a siding or take one out but now I am satisfied that what I have designed is what I want to build. I had originally planned an island platform on the side furthest from the terminal station, to give it a bit more purpose but found that it wouldn't quite fit and, if it did, there would be nowhere to put all the switches and buttons for the points, signals, isolating rails, uncouplers and TPOs. It is very much in the spirit of the layouts of the 1950s, although the scenic treatment (what there will be of it) will be more modern. The board id 8' x 4', or 2440mm x 1220 mm if you prefer, a classic Dublo size. A few of the tracks don't look like they join up properly but there is enough free play in the track to move the pieces a little bit until they do join - Dublo 3 rail is like that. Here it is:

I used this Dublo layout plan as a starting point:

And here is one corner of it. The locomotives are the City of Stoke on Trent (a Wrenn loco that I will convert to 3 rail) and the City of Bradford (a repainted and three railed City of London)
